The Faroe Islands national football team, admitted to FIFA and UEFA in 1988–1990, earned fame with a shock 1–0 win over Austria in their first competitive match in 1990. Their biggest achievement came in Euro 2016 qualifiers, defeating Greece both home and away in historic upsets. They have also enjoyed regional success, winning the Island Games twice and debuting in the Baltic Cup with a fourth-place finish in 2024.
