The Liechtenstein national football team, governed by the Liechtenstein Football Association, joined FIFA and UEFA in 1974 and played its first official matches in the early 1980s. Their milestone first competitive win came in 1998 with a 2–1 victory over Azerbaijan during Euro qualifiers. Though they've often struggled in qualifying campaigns, they’ve pulled off occasional surprises, such as defeating Latvia in 2007 and drawing 2–2 with Portugal in a World Cup qualifier.
