The Lithuania national football team, run by the Lithuanian Football Federation, played its first match in 1923 and returned to international competition after independence in 1990. They have never qualified for a FIFA World Cup or UEFA European Championship but have won the Baltic Cup 10 times, including four consecutive titles from 1996 to 2000. Unlike football, Lithuania places much greater emphasis on basketball, where their national team is a global powerhouse and the sport is often seen as the country’s “second religion.”
